open-source advertising on stackoverflow
Fri, 2010-10-15, 14:14
Is it worth our while if someone with access to the original artwork for the Scala logo produces something for the StackOverflow sidebar?
http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/53346/open-source-advertising-sidebar-2h-2010
Then we can all go over there to vote on it :)

Re: open-source advertising on stackoverflow
Hi scala community,
I don't know if the tone is acceptable and the message suitable... but here goes one proposal.
I am also not sure if the java logo in there is not a trademark infringement... just wanted to add a little spice in there.
Regards
Pavol Vaskovic

I applaud you for your commitment in this matter. However, I personally
don't think this - let me call it so - "picking on Java" attitude is the
right kind of advertising. If you want to win anyone over, the wrong
strategy is to tell them that their current tool of choice is cold
coffee as that is more likely to put them off as it may come across as a
kind of personal attack.
I wish I had any better headline or message to suggest, but I don't.
However, I hope you can see my point nevertheless.
Best regards
Andreas

I am with Andreas here, even if I appreciate the spice/wink. It is good as a private joke,
not as a serious (?) advertising.
I appreciate the "step up" and the list of niceties.
Somehow, I would slip a "programming language" somewhere: I noticed that some of the ads
of the thread just fails to expose what is the purpose of the OSS project they
advertise... (even if one can assume that Scala is well known enough).
If one want to play on coffee, why not a "Scala, what else?" joke? :-)

Just to make clear, this advertisement is for open source _projects_. Ie, the idea is not getting Scala programmers, but getting programmers to work on the Scala project.

Re: open-source advertising on stackoverflow
I like the `step up to Scala' theme. but also think the `tired of old (java cup)' is too negative.
Maybe instead of this header have a footer with the text
get involved:
and a list of high-profile open source Scala projects, such as lift, akka, scalate, scalatra, swarm, ...
?
Cheers

Re: open-source advertising on stackoverflow
I keep playing around with themes along the lines of "the JVM was a
good choice, but there's so much wasted potential", but still feel
there's a perfect tag line hiding just inside my mental blind-spot.
Best I've come up with so far is "take it to the next level". Still
doesn't quite seem complete though...

Looking good! Though I'd personally still like to see a splash of colour and the Scala logo back in there.
I guess we'll also need a landing page linking to all the Scala-based FLOSS projects that are looking for contributors. I have the scalaprojects.com domain already registered, which I'd be happy to donate for this.

Excellent! We have the name, the logo, a background image illustrating both and not in the
way, a concise and precise summary of what the project is, amusing (connected to the name)
slogan and call for help.

Excellent! We have the name, the logo, a background image illustrating both and not in the way, a concise and precise summary of what the project is, amusing (connected to the name) slogan and call for help.
Good job!

Re: Re: open-source advertising on stackoverflow
Final details then!
We need a tagline for mouseover, and the image has to be hosted at a fixed url.Can anyone host this in an "official" location? (I'm looking at you Toni...)
For the mouseover, I'm thinking "Because Scala Johansson would want you to..."

I don't get the Scala Johansson joke...
Is that related to an actress? Ah, Scarlett Johansson perhaps? I still don't get the
relation with Scala, beside the (approximative IMHO) pun.
I liked also the "Scala, what else?" line, related to coffee, but again it can be obscure
to a number of people... :-)
Finding a good punchline is hard! ;-)

Sorry, but have to do this: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22Scala+Johansson%22

Fair enough but I got a bunch of pages, none seeming authoritative... (I skip the videos,
I won't see them at work... :-))
Perhaps it is a well known joke among scalists. If you target mostly this population
(which makes sense...), the joke can take, then. But my point was that non-initiated
people won't get the joke.
Of course, the whole point of the ad can be questioned... Is it to attract programmers
outside of the Scala sphere? I doubt it, the project need experimented Scala coders. So it
is to attract Scala programmers, but I suppose most of them are already aware of the needs
for help in the project.
Sorry for random thoughts, I still think the base idea is good and nicely done.
And well, a private joke is good enough for a title attribute of an image... After all,
XKCD is a famous precedence there... ;-)

It's the video you wanted, from this year's "JavaZone Trailer", so well known amongst Java devs too.

Hello Kevin,
This logo is 198x59, and should fit nicely into the 220x220 requirement for
the StackOverflow artwork: http://lampsvn.epfl.ch/images/Scala_Logo2008.png
Please feel free to produce with it something suitably tasteful for the voting.
If you need different colors, please let me know: we use two different
versions (black text and white text) for light and dark backgrounds
respectively. You can see both at: http://scala.spreadshirt.net
Just contact me privately if you need further variations on the logo or if
you have any questions.
Thanks,
Toni
