Dear Scala users,

I'm to go into Scala programming. I have seen the books offered but
cannot decide which one to buy. My background is Standard ML, in which
I'm fairly versed. Which book is for me? Or, I should go ahead and
read the manuals?

ATM there is only one Scala book available: "Programming in Scala: A
Comprehensive Step-by-step Guide". It's well written and a good
introduction to the language.

Other than that I would recommend reading some blogs about Scala. Planet
Scala, http://www.drmaciver.com/planetscala, has a good collection.

If you're new to Java and the JVM, reading up on these subjects are
definitely helpful in understanding Scala behavior and concepts, and
also when using Java libraries from Scala. There are some good books to
help with that, "Effective Java" and "Java Concurrency in Practice"
comes to mind. The Java tutorials might be helpful as well,
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html.

I do not recommend my book, Beginning Scala.  I targeted book primarily to Java developers... I think you would find it unsatisfying.
