Eclipse update on plugin-nightly breaks Eclipse
Fri, 2009-04-03, 13:49
Hello all,
I searched the archives but did not find anything similar so hear I go:
Whenever I update the SDT plugin (which I do almost every day) via Eclipse
softwasre update Eclipse will ask me if I want to restart the IDE. After
confirming Eclipse shuts down and tries to restart. This always fails,
sometimes with an error about bein unable to restore the workspace.
Restarting Eclipse once more usually works but once in every three-five
times Eclipse will have lost most of its perspectives. No more Java or Scala
perspectives.
I have to reinstall Eclipse every time. If I then install the plugin again
in the clean Eclipse install everything works as expected.
Seems like overwriting an existing plugin version does not work flawlessly.
Regards,
Silvio

I should have phrased that better. I have to reinstall Eclipse only when I
loose the perspectives. There may be some other way to get them back but I
do not know how so I start over from scratch.
Since the reinstall is quick I it is not a reason for me to not update but I
would prefer a more smooth update, of course.

Aah, ok, on the menu Window, Open Perspective, Other .... should work.
If it doesn't then something very strange is happening (I could
understand the Scala perspective being affected, but the Java one
would be very bizzare) and should probably be raised as an issue.

Hello Chris,
Yes, I know about that but the perspectives are really gone from that list
as well. Usually the perspective I had open during the update is listed as
or (so with sudden additional angle brackets) but it is
broken and does not open.

sounds worth raising an issue on.

Well, yes ... but if you do, please attach a patch ;-)
I agree it's a pain, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it's mainly
related to Equinox Aspects and/or generic Eclipse/p2 issues, so
there's probably not very much that can be done about it (other than
by contributing patches upstream). It'd be great to get some analysis
of the problem, but TBH I don't think it causes enough pain to enough
people for me to want to bump it up my priority list (even tho' I'm
probably the person it causes the most pain).
Cheers,
Miles

Re: Eclipse update on plugin-nightly breaks Eclipse
My workaround (after this happens) is to uninstall the scala eclipse
feature (make sure you get the equinox aspects plugin). Then I can
reinstall the plugin an everything is ok.
Also make sure you start eclipse with the -clean option

Re: Eclipse update on plugin-nightly breaks Eclipse
I've sometimes had a similar problem. Eclipse won't start at all but
instead would hang when showing the splash screen. I'm guessing it's
related to aspects since that's printed on the console right before
the hang. My workaround is then, to move away the .project file of the
Scala project I'm suspecting to cause this problem. Eclipse can't open
this project then but is at least able to start up properly.
Afterwards you have to restore the .project file and open the project
again.

Re: Eclipse update on plugin-nightly breaks Eclipse
How would I know which Scala project to suspect? I have three such projects
in my workspace together with about 5 Java projects. Just closing the scala
projects before updating does not help.

This I get as well.

This I don't need to do, are you not able to re-open the scala
perspective? Is the workspace locked (I sometimes have this)?

Agreed, but I've never had to reinstall eclipse. This seems very
strange indeed.
