I remember vaguely a discussion in one of the Scala lists about the program
Google Summer of Code [1] (you know, where Google donates money to students
and to mentoring organizations to contribute to an open-source project).

Some of those organizations have started discussing project ideas, given
that the deadline for mentoring organizations to apply is March 13th [2].
Anyway, according to that timeline, the 2010 edition will be announced only
on Feb 8th.

Someone mentioned in that discussion that only a few programming languages
were acceptable, but from what I've read that's not the case: (a) there's no
such requirement in the Program Terms of Service [3]; and (b) at least one
Scala-based project was accepted previously [4] (with Apache as open-source
organization)

So I guess the Scala team could apply.

As for project ideas, there's a bunch already on my website :-) [5]
(which of course is a shameless plug, there's no requirement to limit
project ideas to the compiler only)
