The Scala project has applied to be a mentoring organization for the Google Summer of Code (http://code.google.com/soc). While we haven't yet been accepted, we are very optimistic!

We have collected a list of project ideas. We do expect students to explore these ideas in much more detail, adding their own suggestions and plans on how to proceed. Find all the details about Scala and the Google Summer of Code on the ideas page.

What about a Scala frontend for GWT?

Re: Your Summer of Code with Scala
The Lift Web Project has also applied to be a mentoring organization for GSoC.  Our ideas page is http://www.robocatapps.com/gsoc_idea.html

Re: [scala-announce] Re: Your Summer of Code with Scala

As we have written on the Scala SoC page, the list of projects that we
have proposed is only a starting point for students so that they know
what are the possibilities. People are more than welcome to come up with
their own proposals as long as they satisfy Google's and our requirements.
If you want to discuss the details of the project, then scala mailing
list is the right place (just please don't do it on scala-announce as it
is used for different purposes).

There are two ways to do this: Produce Java source or produce GWT's
internal representation. Producing Java source is surprisingly hard
and will certainly be more than a SoC project. Producing GWT internal
code will most likely need some mentoring from the GWT team.

I'd love to see this too! :) GWT is pretty much the sole remaining
reason I find myself having reluctantly to go back to writing some
Java code (which is increasingly painful ;-).

FWIW some effort started here:
http://scalagwt.gogoego.com/

though it looks like its gone a bit silent. Maybe those folks will be
willing to help with a SoC project?

Re: Your Summer of Code with Scala

The Scala team is proud to inform that we have been accepted as a
mentoring organization for the Google Summer of Code!

Interested students should have a look at our list of project ideas and
requirements. Please note that the list has been slightly updated since
the last announcement. Of course students are more than welcome to
submit their own proposals as long as they are interesting and satisfy
the requirements (please post to the main scala mailing list if you have
any questions).

We are looking forward to seeing your proposals!

Re: [scala-announce] Re: Your Summer of Code with Scala

I heard from Lex Spoon on the GWT team that he might get an intern to
do a Scala -> GWT translation. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it
will work out!

Cheers

Thanks for kind words :-)

Actually it's me that you mention above. I'll be working with GWT team
during the summer (starting in July) on adding Scala support to GWT.

See you all guys attending Scala days on Thursday!
