actors book (finally)
Wed, 2010-10-13, 10:26
I enquired about such a thing back in April last year:
http://scala-programming-language.1934581.n4.nabble.com/scala-SwingWorke...
Finally, my wish has been granted:
http://www.artima.com/forums/flat.jsp?forum=270&thread=308159
Still incomplete, but having read the preface, it looks excellent.
Many thanks for this,
Rob

Re: actors book (finally)
The pdf looks great on the 9-inch DX, but you'll need to crop the document with something like http://sourceforge.net/projects/briss/.

I really do hate to put a negative spin on it, but IMHO $37 is too
much for a book that clocks in (according to the TOC) at 100 pages. I
cannot help but to compare it with O'Reilly's pocket reference books
that hovers around the $10-15 price point.

Re: actors book (finally)
For me: Number of pages is not a unit of value.
If those 100 pages are filled with usable information, I'm glad not having to read a lot of filler text.
However, I haven't seen any sample chapter so I think it'd be a good move to offer some preview to make people think it's worth its price.

Re: actors book (finally)
I don't disagree. I have thin books I value highly and very thick
books that barely serve as door stops. Still, my initial reaction is
what it is. There's a preview pdf of the first chapter, however it
contains no code at all.

Re: actors book (finally)
Am currently on p 31, and already feel I've learned a lot. (Actors are
related to other concurrency approaches, and there's a great
explanation of why they make things easier.)
Looking ahead, Chapters 3, 8, 9 and 10 are so far only one page in length.

It's a preprint. It's not finished yet.
Chapters
3 (Scala's Language Support For Actors)
8 (Remote Actors)
9 (Using Scala Actors With Java APIs)
10 (Distributed and Parallel Computing With Scala Actors)
still lack. I'm also curious to see whether the rest of the chapters still
gain in weight.

If more pages are coming and the TOC listing is inaccurate in this
respect, then I would not hesitate to withdraw my criticism of the
price. Maybe I should have realized something was up now that I look
at the actual numbers listed after each chapter rather than the final
number only.
I guess I would have liked to see some caveat with the TOC (or not
even include the page numbers at all), or a rough estimate on the
final page count, to stop me from jumping to conclusions... "you will
be entitled to receive periodic updates as the authors complete the
book" just didn't click enough with me.
So, given the responses regarding the state of the work, my price
criticism is not warranted. My apologies to the authors for the hasty
judgement.
