Yeah, it makes a lot of sense to use the open source version rather than the Oracle version, so long as it is actively maintained.
FWIW, I've tried in the past to try and cooperate with awkward and unpleasant project owners, and "Jenkins" is probably better off with the fork. Oracle gets control over what it wants, and the open-source group gets control over the part they care about, so generally everyone is better off. Combining forces isn't much of an advantage if the "combined force" is constantly biting and spitting at each other.
