A lot of spam since GoogleGroups

Okay, this is not really scala-user related, but it has to be posted somewhere somehow ... Since the change for googlegroups instead of classical mailing lists, a lot of scam is going in my gmail  inbox. I would gently apply filters of some kind, for what they are worth, but it's probably going to throw some scala threads to the trash by mistake. Plus, I never had spam or scam on my account before that, or even now outside the scala googlegroups threads. so I  guess the security epic fail is not my bad.

From other users experience, is this a recurrent problem of googlegroups in general, or is it specific to scala groups ? Is there anything that can be done about it and - not to offense someone possibly in charge, is there actually anybody who could have time to tackle the question ?

Re: A lot of spam since GoogleGroups
For small groups, it makes sense to introduce moderation on membership. Not sure if it is applicable here, may require a lot of efforts.

Thanks,

Re: A lot of spam since GoogleGroups

I'm subscribed to a number of googlegroups mailing lists and this one seems to be the one with the most spam.

A common solution is first-post moderation for new users. Of course this requires somebody to spend some time doing the moderation but this duty could be distributed among a handful of people to make the burden lighter.

FWIW, if the list administrator(s) would like to enable new-member moderation, but are unwilling to incur the ongoing effort, I'd be happy to volunteer to be on a moderation cabal.
Unfortunately Google Groups doesn't have a "Moderator" permission which would only allow user and message moderation; the "Manager" permission allows moderation, but also the ability to change group settings.

Likewise... I moderate a ton of groups so adding one or two more won't
add much to my burden. All the GoogleGroups I run/moderate have "first
post moderation" enabled.

Get pretty annoying innit? I'm happy to do the moderation thing for
first-time-non-spam posters.

We do this moderation for functionaljava and scalaz mailing lists too,
where we will still receive spam mail, but it doesn't get through to
the entire list -- only the person who marks it as spam. I'll take a
few on the chin so that others aren't bombarded as we seem to be.

It's also quite easy and effortless to moderate (I often do it from my
phone, on a train, standing on one leg, with the other eye closed,
upside-down, drinking a beer, with a straw, through my nose).

Google groups without "first post moderation" = guarantee of spam.

Every google group I am in is nowadays first post moderated.

How are we covered for timezones now?
If there's nobody in the UK yet, I'll happily sign up for duty as well.

Also someone needs to ban spammers that are already group members.

Re: A lot of spam since GoogleGroups

For the record, according to this post filtering on the sender address
might not be a particularly effective solution with Google Groups:

Re: A lot of spam since GoogleGroups

Whilst it's possible that a very, very large mailing list with a lot
of traffic would fall foul of such spoofing (because it's worth
doing), I have never seen this occur in any of the groups I'm in
(which have 5,000 or fewer members and up to 100 messages a day).

I don't think it's appropriate to throw the baby out with the
bathwater here - moderation _will_ help this group and we clearly have
plenty of volunteers.

Re: A lot of spam since GoogleGroups
I also think we should give moderation a try. My preference would be to try something lightweight first, such as first-post user moderation only.

doing), I have never seen this occur in any of the groups I'm in
(which have 5,000 or fewer members and up to 100 messages a day).

I don't think it's appropriate to throw the baby out with the
bathwater here - moderation _will_ help this group and we clearly have
plenty of volunteers.

The idea expressed at the top of the thread and thorough is to moderate the first post of
every user.
Most spam we saw here is "hit and run". Subscribe to the list with a random account, send
the spam, abandon the account.

Moderating the first post would allow to filter out these messages, and would result in a
low amount of work for the volunteers. At worst, first time users will see some delay
before their message reaches the list.

Agreed. One some of the groups I'm on, that change alone resolved 99%
of the issues.

Re: Re: A lot of spam since GoogleGroups
OK, all the scala google groups are now first-post-moderated.Moderators are Paul, Iulian, Toni and me. We'll see if this is not enough.
scala-announce is, as previously, moderated for every post.
Cheers: Lukas

You know that you cannot rely on the information in the message header of a
mail, right? I could easily send messages to the group as "PhiLho@GMX.net"...
I get enough spam which uses my own address as sender...

The real pity is that there was a working solution which happily got shot down
for some bling-bling.

That has not proven to be an issue on any other Google Group to which
I belong or which I moderate. Let's not imagine problems until and
unless we actually encounter them...

Sure. http://ejohn.org/blog/google-groups-is-dead/ <-- proven to be a problem
for them. Of course you can always have faith in the future :D

_for them_ yes. A group that has 14x the number of members and 22x the
number of messages compared to scala-user. The Clojure Google Group
has 3x the number of members and 9x the number of messages compared to
scala-user and seems to have no problem with first-post-moderation
(and no problem with spam, either).

Re: A lot of spam since GoogleGroups
Hi,

I have a few groups in here. This worked for me:

Spammers usually uses robot to find target group in public directory.
So administrators should remove this group from public Directory listing.
It can be done in:

Group settings > Access tab >
Directory listing
List this group in the Google Groups Directory Do not list this group

It should solve most of spam instantly.
